...background checks, trafficking targeted
There is bipartisan support for strengthening and possibly expanding the background check system for gun purchases, as well as passing a federal law to crack down on gun traffickers, senators from both political parties indicated during a Judiciary Committee hearing on gun violence Wednesday.
Those two policy proposals seemed to find middle ground among Democratic and Republican lawmakers during a crowded and often combative hearing, the first since the fatal shooting of 20 children and six educators at a Connecticut elementary school on Dec. 14 put gun violence back on the congressional agenda.
