Have always loved this photo of John Quincy Adams. Taken in 1843, long after he left the White House, it's believed to be one of the oldest presidential photos. Adams, when this was taken, was a Congressman. He served 17 years in the House after leaving the White House (he called his presidency the “four most miserable years of my life”). Adams was generally a stern, serious man - and this picture says it all. Thanks for the reminder from a follower, @DanAmira. As for the first photo of a SITTING president, it's
