Odd Couple: This photo of President Nixon and Elvis Presley remains the most requested item by visitors to the National Archives. It was Dec. 21, 1970. Elvis, staying at the Hotel Washington a few blocks away, asked to visit the President. Nixon said yes. Elvis brought a gun into the White House – a .45 Colt – and gave it to Nixon as a gift. Certainly would not be possible today. What did they talk about? The King asked the President if he could help in the U.S. war on drugs - something Presley certainly knew about!
