One reason Richard Nixon was considered one of the nerdiest Presidents is that he had trouble connecting with people. Not connecting in the political sense - he was elected twice, after all - but in the personal sense. He was famous for being lousy at small talk and frankly preferred being alone. Late in his presidency, as Watergate slowly destroyed him, the White House arranged for this photo op of Nixon on the beach at San Clemente, California, where he maintained a home. The goal was to soften Mr. Nixon's image. And so the President approached, on water's edge, wearing dress pants - and wingtip shoes. If there was any one shot of Richard Nixon that showed how out of touch he was, it's this one.
